Document an Animal

Now it’s time to take the challenge up a level! Let’s get an animal into your nature journal.

Documenting an animal might be more difficult, because it doesn’t stay still. Here are some strategies you can use to help you:

  • Do a quick sketch first
  • Take a photo of your animal to work from
  • Choose a practice animal that moves slowly, like a caterpillar
  • Work partially from memory and partially from field guides

Don’t forget to also take notes about whatever animal you see. You might want to write down when and where you saw it, its behaviour, or anything else noteworthy.

Your Tasks for this Unit:

  • Draw, sketch or paint an animal in nature
  • Make notes in your journal about your animal observation
